Yo I can't believe I wasn't practicing self care earlier. I must have been going crazy with all the things I was doing and not caring for myself. I think as Nigerian women, we tend to believe we can take on a lot of things and “relaxation” is just lazying about...like my aunties or mother would say. We are supposed to be working hard every single second of the day whether in the home or at work or at school. To be honest, right now I'm not here for that anymore.
I know we all want to be powerful independent women but please we have to practice self care in order to be healthy as well. I mean... there is nothing wrong with taking some time out for your self. Your mental health matters too honey boo boo. I'm going to list 5 easy peasy ways to self care. You can do this after a stressful day to get yourself back to normal. If you have any pointers please include them in the comments. Always happy to learn from another sister :)
1.Light a scented candle or burn Incense.
I can't believe I wasn't always doing this. I'm so obsessed with scented candles right now. I'm only getting used to incense now because I feel like the smell is so overpowering and so incensey (lol)...but candles yo...they are my best friends. So you don't have to get one of those expensive candles to enjoy...but shoo if you have the money...splurge baby splurgeeee. I normally get my candles from Ross or TJMaxx...They have some really nice ones there and they range from $4.99 - $12.99 depending on the size you want. I normally get a medium sized candle and it lasts for a couple of weeks which is great for me. I also stay away from scents that are too overpowering like vanilla or pumpkin and go for scents that are more lean and fresh. My current candle is Tropic Moss by DW home amd it smells heavenly.
2.Listen to Music
I love listening to music when I'm burning a candle...sometimes I can't do it but when I can its like the best shit everrr. I stay away from anything that will give me a headache though...this is self care not party...but thats just me. For some reason music from the 70s from Nigeria really works for me (lol...my friends reading this are probably rolling their eyes but whateverrrr). Listen to some nice relaxing jams. Some of my top choices include: Dododo by Sir Victor Uwaifo, Happy Survival by Eddie Okwedy, Outer Space by G and Genevieve, Warm on a Cold Night by Honne, anything Sade, Incantation by Moses Sumney etc....Please comment with some music you like listening to as well...Always happy to add new music to my playlist.
3. Take a bath or even a gaddam Shower
Listen...for some reason water makes you calm the fuck down. It also clears my mind and when I am going through something difficult and trying to pick a direction, taking a shower helps me see the path clearly. I do not know why this happens..it just does for me and I absolutely love it. Taking a bath is really such a relaxing thing to do. Come prepared with your music, your candles, your face mask etc and just chill out with your favorite bath bomb or oils. I like the bath bombs from LUSH because of the beautiful colors they make in the water. I am also a huge fan of rose, lavender and eucalyptus oil scents for bath or shower.
4. Drink some tea
Tea is so good. I mean drinking tea has so many health benefits that I am not going to get into but just know it does a body good. My go to tea is green tea and sometimes chamomile tea. You can find these in any store. Now if you want to get fancy like some of my friends...boil a lemon with hot water, add some honey and or some ginger with a splash of ACV and have yourself a nice detoxifying drink.
5. Order in
You can cook too but shoo order in. Eat that delicious food that you want to eat. You have worked hard for it and you don't do this often. Nothing says self care like hearing the doorbell ring and knowing it is some delicious food that you have not lifted a finger to cook. In your head the only voice you should have is Mama Dee singing “I deservveeee” because yes sis you have worked your butt off and now it is self care time. I just wish I could figure out how to get Jollof Rice delivered to my door.
I hope you practice all my easy self care activities...there are a lot more obvi but lets start with these ones right now if you are lost in the art of caring for yourself.
